Canva AI 2.0: editable, layered design from a single prompt

In April 2026, at its Create conference in Los Angeles, Canva unveiled Canva AI 2.0, calling it its most significant product update since launch.

The Canva Design Model

At its core is Canva's own foundation model, the Canva Design Model. According to Canva, it produces fully layered, editable output from a single prompt: not a flat image but a design whose every element can be changed separately.

Key features

  • Conversational design and agentic orchestration: Describe what you want; the system runs the steps.
  • Brand Intelligence: Applies brand fonts, colours and style to new and existing designs.
  • Memory Library: Remembers user preferences and brand styles.
  • Connectors: Integrations with Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Zoom and HubSpot.
  • Scheduled tasks: Recurring work produces drafts for review rather than auto-publishing.

The scale is large: Canva reported 265 million monthly active users and 31 million paid subscribers at the end of 2025, and its AI products had been used more than 27 billion times.

What it means for designers

Canva building its own design model makes it even easier for businesses to handle everyday visual needs in-house. The designer's role shifts from producing every visual to setting up the brand rules and template system. A well-built brand kit is the precondition for tools like Brand Intelligence to get things right.
