Istanbul grows on the design map: Global Design Forum and FDI Istanbul 2026

2026 was a year in which Istanbul strengthened its place on the international design agenda. Two major events connected the city with global design circles.

Global Design Forum İstanbul

London Design Festival's ideas platform, Global Design Forum, took place in Istanbul for the first time on 13 to 16 May 2026 at Topkapı Palace. It was organised by London Design Festival with People Places Ideas. Melek Zeynep Bulut was artistic director and Beatrice Galilee, co-founder of The World Around, was forum content advisor.

The theme was "Worlds in Contact": how can design embrace many ways of living and making without imposing a single shared visual language? Alongside two days of talks, the programme included the citywide 'İstanbullar: Design Route,' site-specific installations and a garden design competition.

FDI Istanbul 2026

FDI Istanbul (Furnishings & Design Istanbul) held its third edition on 24 to 26 September 2026 at the Istanbul Fair Center. Run by MOSFED under the motto "Where Design Leads," it showed new work from 90 brands, with 85 curated selections across four exhibitions. FDI Stage & Talks covered design, the creative economy, sustainability and digitalisation, with speakers including biomimetic design pioneer Ross Lovegrove.

Why it matters

International events bring more than prestige. They pull Turkish designers and brands into global conversations and put their work in front of foreign buyers and press. For work rooted in local identity that can still speak to the world, Istanbul is an increasingly strong stage.
